The Volunteer Manitoba Awards are are fast approaching! They are going to look a little different this year but make sure to tune into Facebook Live on November 18th to join in on celebrating volunteerism in Manitoba.
Today we are celebrating Alexandra Blinder! Winner of the 2020 Spark Outstanding Pro Bono Consultant Award for her work with 1JustCity to develop a joint budget format for the organization for 2020 and beyond.
Alexandra has been a Spark volunteer since 2016, when she offered to share her expertise as a CPA. Her skills were a great asset to 1JustCity, that is a relatively new and growing organization formed from the amalgamation of four member charities, formerly administered by the United Church.
1JustCity supports three drop-in community centres in Winnipeg’s core neighbourhoods: West Broadway, the West End and Osborne Village. They offer meals, art, senior’s programs, haircuts, showers, laundry, toiletries, and clean undergarments. In the winter months they run a pop up warming centre in Osborne Village: Just a Warm Sleep.
This non-profit’s diversity made for a complex budget format – and that’s where Alexandra’s skills really shined.
“With great patience, she showed me the ins and outs of budgeting and projection budgets, as well as ways we could better utilize QuickBooks and Excel to manage our budget overall,” says Tessa Blaikie-Whitecloud. “On top of that, with Alexandra’s financial expertise, we’ve been able to delve into planning for the expansion of our programs! Her help has made it possible for us to dream even bigger.”
Congratulations on your win, Alexandra! Thank you for volunteering your expertise to 1JustCity – making Winnipeg a healthier, more vibrant community.
